A night out at a casino is ideal for enjoying some time with family and friends and getting a real sense of that special, suave and sleek James Bond experience while watching the dealers and players at the green baize tables. Even if you don’t sit at one of the tables yourself but are just there to play some slots, why not consider recreating the whole casino experience at home?
Let’s imagine that classic James Bond theme around which your casino evening will be structured; think through the details and arrangements – your budget, games to play, food and drink, what equipment will be needed and how people are going to dress.
Numbers
Choose the number of invitees carefully. Too many and there will be no room to move, too few and you will be rattling around in echoing rooms. Assess the spaces you have and be practical about how many friends to invite. Make sure there are a date, time and place on the invitations.
Games
Decide what games are going to be available and stick to that decision. Good games for communal play are roulette, blackjack, all sorts of variants of poker, baccarat – James Bond’s main game at the casino – bingo and craps. You don’t have to provide them all but the more there are the more opportunity your guests will have to try different things. Remember that all these games, as well as slots, can now be played online, so think about providing a computer or two for people to access some of these when they feel like it.
Money
If you are going for a light-hearted and fun evening, think about providing play money for the night. You may find guests are more comfortable with this, especially if they are not experienced players.
Equipment
Unless you are an inveterate gambler, you are unlikely to have a few dozen packs of cards lying around, or a roulette wheel. Find a company that hires casino equipment, and if you want to hire dealers as well they will be able to help out. You can create the green casino table effect simply by buying some green baize or velveteen and draping the furniture with it. Don’t forget you will need plenty of chips as well.
Food and Drink
For your James Bond evening you should at least offer martinis, shaken not stirred, so having a cocktail mixer at hand would be useful. Cocktail and highball glasses will help to create the 007 style you want, but be sure to offer other drinks options, not forgetting soft drinks. Food needs to be imaginative but easy to eat, so think about as few crumbs as possible and no grease. Light finger foods, canapés and the like are easy to deal with, and if you decide to get caterers in it will take a lot of hassle away from preparation.
Costumes
A dozen James Bonds and Pussy Galores will look a little strange. Encourage guests to pick a variety of characters. You can give them a list, including, or perhaps especially, the villains. Think of Blofeld, Scaramanga, Jaws, Oddjob, Goldfinger or Dr. No.
Then wait for the doorbell to ring, open it, and utter the immortal line: “The name’s Bond, James Bond.”
